NOVEMBER 1868

WED 11 Left home to journey south to fulfil a mission appointed to me at the last conference had with me Esther Ann & her 4 boys 5 horses 4 cows 1 waggon loaded with provisions & household goods. Samuel R come in from rush & helped me get ready & start. Amongst all my acquaintance I knew of none but felt a warm friendly feeling at parting my family feeling sorrowful we travelled to Lehi stay at Br Karrans

THUR 12 went on to Provo Stoped with Br Allman.

FRI 13 to Springville to Br Waters

SAT 14 traveled on to three miles past Summit and camped out

S 15 on to Salt Creek stay at Br Harmons evening attended meeting in the here Bros Bateman & Egbert joined us also the Salt Creek brethren altogether 10 wagons

MON 16 on to Chicken creek bought hay at 25c pr head

TUES 17 on to Round valley

WED 18 on to 4 miles north of Fillmore dry camp breakfasted at Br Pugmire

THUR 19 on to Corn creek

FRI 20 on to Cove creek

SAT 21 on to Indian creek

S 22 on to Beaver were kindly entertained by Br Cartwright only make 6 miles today

MON 23 on to buck horn Spring horses run back

TUES 24 on through red creek and Parrowan to Summit the highest settlement in Utah

WED 25 on through Cedar City Dinnered at Br Gowers & camped on Shirts creek

THUR 26 on through Kanarrah to Ash creek at the foot of the black ridges the first camp in Dixie we felt it warm and pleasant Br Abraham Kimball had joined us at Indian Creek he returning home piloted us

FRI 27 we now encounter bad roads noon at grapevine Spring and camp at Harrisburg

SAT 28 on through Washington to St George we stopped at Br Halls

S 29 the boys herded the stock I attended meeting twice fornoon Bp R Gardner called me up to speak I break-fasted at Br Fawcetts dinnered at Br Halls and Suppered at Br W Carters saw many old friends who greeted us warmly & wish to have me stay and take the st George sheep herd

MON 30 we push on 22 miles & made dry camp in good feed

DECEMBER 1868

TUES 1 on to Beaver Dams met an express informing us of the Navahoes stealing

WED 2 we now kept up a night guard I was on Camp guard 1/2 the night on to the Rio Virgin river 10 miles & camp-ed, now some 15 waggons

THUR 3 started on & soon we heard by express that a company a few miles ahead had their animals stampeded & run off by Navahoes we fitted up 3 good horse men with water & food to the relief of those who had persued the robbers, but some friendly Indians recovered part of the stolen stock we camped near our camped breatheren who had been robbed & sent one of our young men to St Josepth with the news of the misfortune

FRI 4 went on about 10 miles & camped tieing up our horses at night these three days on the river bottoms was mostly very sandy roads

SAT 5 this morning old Beck mare lost her colt after 1 1/2 miles we climbed up the great virgin hill helping each other then over the bench we arrived at St Josepth at 1/2 past 8 O clock PM & kindly entertained at Bro Cose's Alma's Fathers Had travelled about 434 in 23 travelling days average 19 miles per day

S 6 Moved our wagons on to the new city plot apparently a nice sand bed where the newcomers had an encampment on the public square

MON 7 took a stroll amongst the garden & farm lots

THUR 10 In company with Bros Egbert & Spencer went to see the Upper Muddy settlement Stay overnight with Br Murdock

FRI 11 Br M showed us the farm & garden land etc we returned to St Joe

SAT 12 we made a trip to St Thomas

S 13 Prest J. W. Young & party returned last evening from an exploring tour we had a meeting today. I had now seen the different settlements on the Muddy & as the priviledge was given me I made choice to settle at the upper Muddy But Joseph W wished me to hold still a few days untill Br Snow come

S 20 Attended fornoon meeting outdoors on the square Prest E Snow preached afternoon in a house & tent jointly Bro Snow and Young spoke to the people mostly on temporal things Bro Young reported having seen this valley last weeks trip & with Bro Snows santion wanted 12 men to settle it to make them farms & gardens also a herd ground for the stock of the Muddy town He nominated me to go & take charge of this new place as Bishop or Presiding High Priest the motion was seconded voted by the meeting

MON 21 We commenced making up the company

TUES 22 Had a council meeting in Br Young in the evening Present Prest Young Brs Bennet & Leithead, Bros Foote, Staker, Twichel, Bateman, Egbert & Spencer we received instructions about our work & talked over our herding business preparing to move

WED 23 Started for Long Valley Come 12 miles to the mouth of meadow valley wash (7) 4 from Jordan John Keel from Payson, William Rydalek, Alma Cose. About daybreak I rode to W Point & had a further talk with J. W. Y. about our settlement then rode on after the company we traveled 8 miles to water

THUR 24 come 8 miles & made some rode

FRI 25 [Christmas Day] Come 4 miles through grape vine narrows made some rode & got stauld 3 times

SAT 26 on 10 miles & made dry camp

S 27 on 5 miles to hackbarry springs & camped

MON 28 on 6 miles to Long Valley and nooned on 4 miles to water

TUES 29 on 2 miles to city plot camped & rode up to the head of the valley with J. L. Murdock who had overtaken us yesterday

WED 30 move up the creek a little & pitched tent

THUR 31 afternoon we begun to level for a water sect. to city plot, W Spencer made the level

JENUARY 1869

FRI 1 We continued leveling the sect

SAT 2 Jos. L. Murdock & A Cose went out to hunt timber had an Indian pilot 3 Indians come in camp last evening heard of us by two young men who left our camp yesterday to go to Meadow Valley we were levelling to some farm lots then run of 10 two acre lots, south of city plot. rained a little

S 3 rained a little Had a meeting in my tent one Bro Wm Elvy come in today also Bro Morgan Richards was helped by John Keel

MON 4 Moved our camp about 1/2 mile south an Indian brought a letter from Bishop Barron

TUES 5 Answered Bp Barrons letter & sent by Mr Indian Jos. S Murcock & J Keel started with an Indian guide to hunt pine timber I dug up a bed & planted the trees I had brought from home Iras birthday slaughtered a cow afternoon commenced work on water ditch

FRI 8 started for to find a road through to clover valley Steam saw mill Christian Larsen & Indian guide with me

SAT 9 we passed over the divide five miles from the mill visited the mill & went back towards home

S 10 arrived home about sun down judged the mill 28 miles distant from here. the grade over is good for a waggon, but cost heavy to make a road. on the way we fell in with a Bro John K Smith projecting for a saw mill the brethren held meeting in my tent

MON 11 Laying of farm lots for Bros Allen & Richards grubing & commenced plowing

TUES 12 clearing land & plowing

WED 13 Received stock to herd from St Josepth by Br Bennett

FRI 15 Clearing land looking out lots for the brethren that arrived the three last days Yesterday received the St Thomas herd by W. Gibbins

FRI 22 Wm Spencer & I had plowed our wheat lots together today we devided it I sowed my lot & commenced harrowing

SAT 23 finished harrowing & furrowed out Some of it. Br Rydalch come in from St Joseph

S 24 Had meeting in the big tent wrote a letter to Bp. Gardner

MON 25 finished furrowing out my wheat & got up a load of wood Held meeting with the young men in big tent

SAT 30 rained last night & today. fiscing harness in tent & writing letters

S 31 Bros Bennett & Staker with their families arrived we have no place to hold meetings five of the bretheren come in late in the night from a five days trip after wild cattle They got one shot & two more lost & 1 horse

FEBRUARY 1869

MON 1 jobing about camp plowing in barley

TUES 2 finished plowing in barley & irrigating it

WED 3 worked on sect afternoon dragged the Barley ground forwarded by A Cose letters to Bp Hunter, Bp Gardner also John E, Bro Pugmire, Thos Hall also forwarded a petition for a mail route

THUR 4 worked on water sect

FRI 5 rained most of the day levelling water sect & located corner stake for public corral

SAT 6 measured of some farm lots. got up a load of fire wood John Egbert planted potatoes Bargained with Warren Pollett to herd for us for 30 dollars pr month he board himself

S 7 Held meeting in Br Bennetts tent It was voted unanimous that Br Staker be our water master Wm Gibson arrived from St Thomas brought the mail matter from St Josetph I recieved four letters from home Dated Jen 20.

MON 8 Attended to a general drive Laid off a public corral ten rods square in 15 lengths of 44 ft each 16th man make gate

TUES 9 cutting stakes for fencing garden Indian Jim come down. I had Br Gibbons talk to him about some threats an Indian had made, they each got excited Br G struck the Jim at which he drew his knife the bretheren standing by stopped it. (the striking) I mailed a letter for home

WED 10 worked at fencing the garden went up in the cedar & camp Enoch with me

THUR 11 Chopping cedars for corral commenced snowing about noon, we loaded & drove home, got quite wet, first with snow then rain

FRI 12 digging a ditch to make my part of corral fence rain & sleet a part of the day

SAT 13 working on my corral fence afternoon on garden fence, Br Cose and Richards come in from St Joseph

S 14 Had meeting in the big tent, had a good turn out after meeting talked over about herding we concluded to herd in turns & drop the hired man. the past he herded poorly

MON 15 Making garden fence drove to the Cedars & camped Israel with me

TUES 16 Loaded up & drove home. making garden fence five of our men started to St George with two teams

WED 17 making corral fence went to Cedars

THUR 18 Loaded up & drove home leveling garden lot three of our men start to the wild cattle herd Bros Bennett, Keel & Cose

FRI 19 finished putting down my pickets in public corral done some work in garden

SAT 20 in garden preparing bordors to plant trees in picking it up clearing the rocks I worked 4 rows 5 rods Long 3 ft wide

S 21 A cold strong N. Wind had no meeting. no mail I looked over some farming land one mile down the creek

MON 22 Last night I think was the coldest night we have past this winter worked on my garden lot

THUR 25 cut & hauled up a load of staks for garden fence Bros Bateman & Egbert returned from St George brought recieved the following trees from Br Hemenway 21 apple trees at 75c 15.75 4 pear trees at 1.50 6.00 grape cuttings 2.00 some peach seed-lings gratis

FRI 26 made stake fence on lower end of garden

SAT 27 planting fruit trees two men come up from St Joseph, brought up some more stock to herd we had a general drive

S 28 Held meeting in Br Bennets tent

MARCH 1869

MON 1 Bros Staker, Atkinson & Alvey started for St Joseph on Business Br Murdock moved away I planted beet, carrot & onion seed. finished planting my trees also 250 grape cuttings sent a letter to John E. via St Joseph

TUES 2 putting out garden seeds peas, rubarb, tomato, celery, Kale

WED 3 sowed carrot seed made a garden gate afternoon located B & disker repaired sect by garden

THUR 4 went up the kanyon & located & began a fence across the kanyon to keep our stock of the Indian farms brought home some ash sticks also Cotton woods to plant

FRI 5 worked on ditch B wrote a note to Bp Barron sent it by an Indian watering wheat

SAT 6 watering wheat & Bros Erasmas Lynne & Archibald Swapp come in from St Thomas after stock afternoon made bedstead Wm Spencer made a gate for me to use on big corral

S 7 Wm Gibbons started for St Thomas took to the Post office a letter for G Calder written by Esther A one for Geo M Spencer I wrote last evening & a few lines to John E enclosed held a meeting in the big tent in the evening

MON 8 I worked on garden lot sowed some lucerne seed Enoch watered wheat we received two letters from home pr Br Staker one from Mary T of Feb 10 also a few lines from Maria, Harriet, Alice, & Margaret Mackey the last one via Panacca pr Indian

TUES 9 went up the wash to fence it between us & Indians

WED 10 making said fence. cut a load & come home

THUR 11 worked some in garden measuring land & fencing

FRI 12 laying of fencing working in garden

SAT 13 prepared beds & put in some flower seeds some lucerne cucumber & beans

S 14 gathered up the stock from below, corraled counted & drove them up the creek they were troubling the crops had no meeting today wrote a letter to Samuel R

MON 15 about 1 O clock A M Esther A give birth to a Son about home jobing afternoon got up firewood

TUES 16 working in garden sowed some carrot seed rained part of the day

WED 17 still rainy & cold worked some in garden In evening held meeting in Br Bennetts tent the bretheren starting north each spoke expressing their intention to return in the fall with their families to fully carry out thier Dixie

THUR 18 The bretheren rolled out north to cut thier way through the kanyon worked in the garden

FRI 19 Jobing about home & sowed lucerne seed planted peas & onions on Bros Egbert & Bateman lots

SAT 20 prepared ground and planted a little corn in the garden. A lot of Indians come down, heap hungry

S 21 dispatch five Indians to help the brethren on the road carrying provisions & some letters to Samuel R. Eliza & Rachael, Mother & John E. Enoch wrote to Samuel R Alice & Maria, Esther to Margaret Mackey In camp all day about dark we had a heavy thunder shower with high winds

MON 22 working in the garden

TUES 23 in the garden prepared a border & planted it with corn got a load of fire wood

WED 24 have had a cold wind from N.W. several days Shod dobbin made a swivel tree & mended Enochs shoes

THUR 25 working in the garden three of the brethren come in from Clover Valley with lumber the first over the new road

FRI 26 hauling rock to build fence this week had wrote two letters to J. W. Young

SAT 27 Sent them of by Bro Richards & other mail matter Br R returned had met the mail brought me a registered letter with $50.00 also a letter from Angeline & one from John R & Hyrum Bennion Dates Mar 5

S 28 wrote a letter to J. R & Hyrum Bros Plumb & Taylor come in camp after some cows we gathered them up & corraled

MON 29 planted potatoes in the garden I received two bus from Bp Barron of Panacca by John Keel yesterday

TUES 30 sent a span of horses on Br Rydalch team to get flour & other things at St George sent $52.00 cash Indian Jackson & others come in from Santa Clara brought a note from Jacob Hamlin very windy, piling up rock

WED 31 frosty morning niped some garden stuff, hauling rock

APRIL 1869

THUR 1 frost this morning Hauling rock for fencing

FRI 2 went up the kanyon to fix up Piute fence cattle were getting on thier wheat Israel with me.

SAT 3 fixed the fence & brought home a load of shade brush

S 4 A Bro Stewart came for two horses for B. K. Bullock I & Enoch hunted horses

MON 5 I hunted horses Enoch was out found them about noon water part of my garden

TUES 6 I watered wheat. Enoch at the drive put the stock below

WED 7 got up a load of wood & hauled rock for fencin

THUR 8 helping J Keel make horse shoes about noon Jos W Young & Bp Leathhead arrived we looked arround at our improvements

FRI 9 started to Panacca with five others camped at Seap Springs

SAT 10 Nooned with the Bretheren, then rode to Panacca thirty five miles lodged at Br McIntosh'

S 11 In company with Bp Barron looked over the town then visited the Sunday School at forenoon meeting the Bp called on me to speak afternoon the brethren arrived and preached

MON 12 started back home camped at Clover Valley

TUES 13 from Clover Valley we rode through the hills for to find a shorter road Nooned at Mountain Spring arrived home about 9 O clock PM

WED 14 Held a council meeting Jos. W presiding took in consideration our isolated position & many Indians arround us some men must leave to get supplies Br Young gave council to move the families down to the upper Muddy & that two young men stop to take care of the crops this was an important move but I felt it good to comply

THUR 15 gathered up the stock & corraled it all we could find those going north helped drive the herd A few miles I loaded up & started about noon drove to the Hackberry springs Bros. Bennett & Rydalch & myself moving down with the herd, scarce of help

FRI 16 Hunted some missing stock

SAT 17 drove down to Cane Spring

S 18 Bro Bennett & Enoch started back to L Valley after some stock that had run back, we kept camp

MON 19 Afternoon Bro Bennett returned with 2 cows & two mules could not find the missing stock

TUES 20 moved camp two miles the old Beck mare missing

WED 21 Moved to West Point & camped on the public square to day some help met us to drive in the herd & put it in the upper Valley on saturday the 17th we received some mail matter I had a letter from Angeline

THUR 22 unloaded our waggon & fixed up again

FRI 23 rode back to Cane Spring to hunt old Beck found tracks of an Indian driving her of into the hills offered an Indian blankett to bring her in

SAT 24 rode to St Joseph to buy bread Stuff Slept at John Hoits

S 25 Breakfasted at Jos W Youngs had a talk about L Valley recieved 3 letters from Jordan wrote and sent of one returned home to W Point

MON 26 An Indian brought in old Beck I rewarded him with a blanket & some flour believing the Piutes had shaded her to get some such present got up a load of wood

TUES 27 with Br Rydalch I plowed up a garden patch

WED 28 planted some potatoes & other garden seeds helped build a bowery

THUR 29 got a load of crotch sticks for to make a bowery around my tent

FRI 30 fetched a load of willows

MAY 1869

SAT 1 Do built my bowery as far as I had material

S 2 Attended meeting in the new bowery Had our baby blessed by Bp G Leavitt

MON 3 I got up a load of willows received a letter from W. J. Spencer dated April 15 also a few lines from Mother

TUES 4 Enoch started to L Valley with Wm Rydalch to drive down some horses I got up a load of wood

WED 5 Choping firewood up the wash I received 3 letters from Samuel R dated Feb 14 John E. 21st & Geo Calder to Esther of Feb 14th our family all well & prosperous Mary Calder has another Son Mar 25th

THUR 6 got up a load of wood Israel with me

FRI 7 Helping Br Murdock shear his sheep

SAT 8 got up a load of firewood from upper valley

S 9 attended meeting under the bowery. Enoch arrived from Long valley had found 3 horses & drove them down to grapevine narrows some animals give out had to leave

MON 10 Helping Bro Myers haul up hay

TUES 11 made a trip on horse back to St Joseph Had a talk with Jos W about long Valley he said he would rather have our labours on the Muddy than L. Valley I expressed to J W that I would rather make a home in a good settlement than go of to L Valley or any such little place, far of, & liable to be preyed upon by Indians I wrote and mailed a letter to John E & one to J. Egbert

WED 12 Enoch home last night without finding 3 head of horses he drove down from L Valley Plowed up a patch of ground & planted with corn & sweet pumpkin

THUR 13 got a load of willows from below

FRI 14 got a load of firewood from the upper valley

SAT 15 got a load of firewood from below

S 16 Attended the Sunday School & meeting

MON 17 fixing up about the tent hoeing in the garden

TUES 18 got up my team from upper valley & loaded up

[The journal now skips from May 18 to October 5, 1869. During this time John returned to Taylorsville, accompanied by Israel and Sister Julia Adams Young and her child. They arrived Saturday, June 5. John's journal covering this period is included in Volume 3 of "The Bennion Family of Utah." The Muddy River Journal, which we discovered in an account book, covers some of the same dates as the published journals, but is more detailed in most cases and covers much of the time missing in the other journals. SAT 9 got 20 bus of Wheat ground at Spanish fork camped near Payson

MON 11 on past Salt Creek to 4 Mile creek

S 24 on to Panacca Bp Barrons boys took care of my team & we arround his hearth very comfortable

MON 25 unloaded my waggon

TUES 26 started to the Muddy alone Israel stoped with the bucks I camped at Bennett spring

WED 27 on to 7 miles past rock spring

THUR 28 on through Hico to A ranch 16 miles down Pahranagat Valley

FRI 29 on to Ciote Springs

SAT 30 on desert road 25 miles

S 31 on 5 miles to the head of Muddy arrived at West point about 3 O clock PM I had traveled some in the night to make the journey, had come down alone, was anxious & rather lonesome on the journey, was thankful to day to find my family here as well in health & Spirits as they are it revived me after a long journey

NOVEMBER 1869

MON 1 rested in the tent

TUES 2 fixing up to start to Meadow Valley

WED 3 started north up Meadow Valley Wash with family & all we had one Br Petterson & Family accompanied us Camped at grape vine narrows

S 7 northwest the old settlement. left cook stove & other things camped 5 miles above

MON 14 got up a load of fire wood in the evening at a meeting, a female relief Society was organized

TUES 15 started to st George Enoch went to Minersville with my team in company with Br Egbirt

WED 16 water at desert Springs I then rode to Mountain Meadows Lodged at Br Holts

THUR 17 on to St George 35 miles put up at Br H. W. Millers

FRI 18 Met with officers of the cooperative sheep herd Had an article of agreement made out visited some vineyards & orchards with Br Carter & Pixton Had a pleasant interview with Br Snow

SAT 19 Signed our agreement attended School of Prophets wrote a letter to Samuel R.

S 20 started homeward. Lodged at Br Canfields

MON 21 started about 2 O clock AM Breakfasted at Br Holts rode on to Summit spring over took Enoch & Br Egbert

TUES 22 Arrived home about 3 O clock To St George & back 190 miles

WED 23 Spent the day helping the Bishop

THUR 24 about home

FRI 25 got up a load of fire wood

SAT 26 Started to the Clara to recieve Sheep as per Appointment James Anderson with me Camped at Summit spring

S 27 went on to desert spring broke the road 4 inch snow left the bucks then drove five miles on St George road

MON 28 on to Mountain Meadows Camped at Br Holts

TUES 29 rode 13 miles to Br Canfields before breakfast recieving cooperative sheep

DECEMBER 1869

WED 1 received Br Canfields sheep & A few others Drove the flock to the desert 17 miles received 118 from Br Sills flock at the Meadows

THUR 2 recieved some cooperative sheep from Br Chidisters flock, cold north wind

FRI 3 Moved six miles to point of rocks

SAT 4 went through the west P. about seven miles to Shoal Creek& back again W. E. Jones refused to give up A waggon I sent by him to Dixie when he went as my substitute

S 5 received 58 head of sheep we had lost at Br Canfields

MON 6 moved camp ten miles towards Desert springs

TUES 7 I rode to D springs & got 33 Bucks I left there when going out lent one to Br Buchanan one was missing

WED 8 moved camp to Twin Mounds

THUR 9 halterd six old bucks fixed up camp & started home leaving James in charge of the flock Camped at Sum-mit springs

FRI 10 Cut A small load of cedar pickits & arrived home about Sundown

SAT 11 got up a load of wood

S 12 attended meeting twice & baptisms in the afternoon

MON 13 went down the valley to look at some hay land

TUES 14 could not find my horses Br Egbert hunted I worked on his house

WED 15 Br Egbert found my horses I started to the sheep camped at Mountain spring

THUR 16 drove to the sheep found all right the snow had gone of desert
